Alternator off car testing

TTEC 4841 - Electrical and Electronics- Practical

In to days task we had to test alternator off car. first thing was we had to do was the rotor winding to ground test.

we set our multimeter to 2k then we placed our black lead on the center of the rotor shaft and the red on the sling ring. and our reading was infinity so the circuit of the rotor winding was a pass.

Then we moved on the rotor winding internal resistance test: we set our multimeter to 200 ohms then placed both leads on the slip ring and the (spec was 2 - 6 ohms) and our reading potential of 2.2ohms so that was a good sign and it was a pass.

Then moved on by testing the stator winding resistance: we set our multimeter to 200 ohms Then we put the black lead on the common point then tested the three other terminals. the (spec was 0.0ohms - 2ohms) and we had a reading of 0.1 ohms . so that showed us our winding resistance is a pass.

The next step was to set the multimeter to 2k by placing the red lead on the common stator winding terminal and the black lead on the body. that gave us a potential reading of infinity. which showed us our stator winding is a pass.

Then we moved on by doing the rectifier positive diods which we set our multimeter to diodes. we tested our rectifier by puting the common lead on B, and the positive lead on the four p terminals. the ( spec reading 0.5 vd to 0.7 vd ) and our reading was just above pass 0.52 vd so our rectifier is a pass.

Then we moved on doing the negitive diodes. we set our multimeter to diodes. by putting the common lead on E terminal and the positive on four of the p terminals. and our reading showed that if was infinity. Then we swaped our leads by putting the positive lead on E terminal and it showed us a reading of 0.51 vd which is a pass as our ( spec was 0.5 vd to 0.7 vd ) that showed us that the negitive diodes are pass and in good condition.

Then we did our voltage regulator everything was a pass. our field setting light was on as it suposed to be. voltage was reading 14.7 v and the ( spec point is 14.6v ) our short circuit light must be of which it was,the warnning light was on, field light was flashing, the set point voltage 14.7 v so our regulator was in good condition.

That showed us our alternaor is in good condition and its running as is suposed to be. it produced 53amps at 14.5 volts which that showed us its running good.

  1. good overview-- did we bench test your alternator on the machine & if so what did it produce ?
