Battery Testing

TTEC 4841 - Electrical and Electronics- Practical

16/8/2011 tuesday
start = 1.00pm finsh = 4.30pm

In to days task we had to do an inspecting for battery specification: that means what Type battery it, Can you  get to the  eletrolyte= Yes  by unscrewing the cap to get to the electrolytes.

The next step was to do a carry ou visual check. to check the battery what conditions is it in. does it have swellings ( caused by over charging ) , Any areas required attentions , what further actions need to be taken =  The battery needs a clamb.

Then we moved on to the Report electrolyte leves. We had to measure our cells and they were 1 till 6 and the levels we had was all hight.

The next step we did was Battery open circuits voltage (OCV) test: we got asked to measure the
  • terminal voltage across the battery.
  • what range of meter we used = volts Dc
  • what voltage results did you get = 12.68 v
The next method was testing the battery electrolyte specific gravity:

We did a hydrometer test by testing the cells ther we recored out hydrometer test results.

so that told us our specific gravity in the cells of the battery is a Pass.

THen we did a High rate discharge test:

A load test should be performed to deretmine the batterys ability to supply cranking voltage, providing that the battery is at least 50% charged ( 12.4 volts open circuit voltage).

Load current we applyed was 205 half of our battery which was 410.

And the voltage must hold above while load is applied 9.5v if is goes below the battery is not good.

The load should be apply for about 15 second.

Then we moved on using a load tester.

Always using a load tester ( high rate discharge Test ) make sure the load current is of.

  • Then we connected the positive lead to the positive terminal of the battery
  • connect the negative lead lead to the negative terminal of the battery
  • apply the specified load by turning the load control knob
  • wait for the specified time and take voltage held and laod current reading.
Turn off the load tester and disconnect the load tester leads in the reverse order.

Then we recorded the voltage was held while load is applied 10.5 v = pass
Current Load Held 205 = pass

Drain or parasitic draw:

we check the amp fuse in the meter it was ok.  i did that by checking that the the circuit could flow through it by connecting it to another multimeter for continuity.

Battery report. there was nothing need to be recommended the battery is fully charged.
